Wire EDM Machining Services

With our customers always bringing us new challenges in need of unique manufacturing solutions, our shop floor wouldn’t be complete without only the best wire EDM machining and cutting centers. Wire electrical discharge machining (EDM) is the process of cutting nearly any conductive material using an electrically charged wire. When the charged wire and oppositely charged material get close to one another, an electrical spark jumps between them, melting away tiny particles from the material. The wire EDM machining method allows for extremely small, intricate, and precise cuts to be made that wouldn’t be possible otherwise.

More and more, companies strive to gain a competitive marketplace advantage by building better products. Assemblies that are lighter, stronger, and higher-performing often require complex piece parts, which are tough to produce. When traditional machining methods reach their limit, electric discharge machining is the answer.

Obtain high-quality components for your application with meticulous EDM machining services from Moon Tool & Die Co. We’re an ISO 9001:2015-certified machine shop specializing in the manufacture of precision parts and assembly of multifaceted upper-level products for challenging projects.

Wire EDM Cutting Services

At Moon Tool, we have the latest in wire EDM machining services and equipment on our shop floor – the Makino U32j and Makino DUO 43. These machines are full 4-axis capable and use MasterCAM programming offline, and DNC link. They offer wire sizes from .004” to .012” in diameter and have submerged operation.

Our highly skilled staff of professional tool makers know how to utilize our line-up of Makino wire EDM machines to provide solutions that can’t be found anywhere else. Our customers know that the wire EDM cutting services we provide are going to be of the highest quality and will fulfill their needs perfectly.

Benefits of EDM Machining

Electrical discharge machining, or EDM, is the process of removing material from a workpiece using thermal energy. Also called spark machining, arc machining, and burning, this advanced machining method melts or vaporizes material instead of using mechanical force, such as cutting devices. This offers a range of benefits.

  • High Dimensional Accuracy
  • Cuts Complex Shapes Easily
  • Creates Fine Holes
  • Fast Processing Capability
  • Stable Process
  • No Deformation or Delamination
  • Quiet Manufacturing Method
  • Perfect for Close-Fitting Parts
  • Machines Thin-Walled Configurations Without Distortion
  • Non-Contact, Non-Forcing Process
  • Leaves Little to No Burrs
  • Material Hardness does not Impact the Process
  • Custom Tooling Often is not Needed

EDM transforms raw materials into finished parts with precision electrical discharges. When manufacturing, an electrical current passes between an electrode and a workpiece using a dielectric liquid. The dielectric fluid acts as an electrical insulator unless enough voltage is applied to bring it to its ionization point, where it becomes an electrical conductor. The resulting spark discharge erodes the workpiece to form a desired final shape.

Precision EDM Machined Parts

At Moon Tool & Die Co., our area of expertise is the manufacture of tight-tolerance piece parts for demanding applications. We’re committed to delivering quality components that meet any industry-standard, customer specification, or purchase order requirement.

EDM is perfect for parts that require precise, high-accuracy machining or when metal removal using conventional cutting methods is difficult or impossible. A no-touch, no-pressure process makes it suitable for delicate or fragile components that otherwise can’t withstand the stresses of traditional machining methods.

The capability to maintain extreme accuracy makes EDM ideal for the manufacture of dies and molds used in high-volume processing lines. These pieces of tooling often feature complex design points such as sharp internal corners, narrow slots, deep ribs, and other intricate shapes. EDM is the only process that can achieve the precision machining required to make dies and molds without having to segment features into simpler shapes.

Quality Materials for EDM Machining Services

A finished product is only as good as the materials from which it’s made. Subpar materials are prone to premature failure, which can cause expensive recalls, elicit negative customer feedback, harm company perception, and, ultimately, hurt the bottom line.

Moon Tool & Die understands not just the capabilities of our equipment, but also which materials they are best suited to machine. EDM can cut any conductive material with relative ease. It excels with hard and brittle materials for which conventional milling is inappropriate.

Examples include:

  • Titanium
  • Kovar
  • Carbide
  • Copper
  • Alloys
  • Superalloys

Advantages of Wire EDM Machining

  • Quality & Precision: Our Wire EDM machines are able to cut and match your prototypes and designs within +/- .0001”. Precise cuts allow for high dimensional accuracy, especially among extremely fitted parts.
  • Speed: With the ability to long run unattended and precisely produce precision parts, our Makino U32J and Makino DUO43J machines allow for less set up time, as well as faster processing times to reach a finished product.
  • Cost Effective: Moon Tool's Wire EDM Machining services provide accurate and reliable cuts at some of the most competitive costs in the region. When working with a variety of costly materials, wire EDM Machining allows better dies and molds to produce in a single process.

Industry-Tailored EDM Machining Solutions

EDM is well suited for the production of small, highly detailed items that would typically be too delicate for other machining options. Additionally, the process is cost-effective for low-quantity projects and can prove to be beneficial in prototype manufacturing. Versatile and accurate, precision EDM parts machining services from Moon Tool & Die Co. are perfect for an array of industries.

  • Automotive
  • Architectural
  • Construction
  • Electronics
  • Renewable Energy
